June Alice Benton was born on May 24th, 1933 in Mankato, MN to Owen and Verona (Pischner) Benton. She grew up in Janesville, MN and attended parochial school at Trinity Lutheran Church. She graduated from Janesville High School. June attended Mankato Teacher's College where she received her teaching degree. She taught school in Minneota, MN. On December 27th, 1955, she married August Poppe in Janesville, MN. They lived in Madison Lake, MN until moving to Truman, MN in 1960. In 1962 they moved to Lewisville, MN. She worked for the State of Minnesota teaching for the DAC in St. James. August died in 1973. In 1977, June began teaching in the Truman School and taught there until retiring in 1996. June married Clarence Tonn in June of 1981. Clarence died in October of 1992. She entered the Luther Memorial Home in Madelia in 2001. June was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Lewisville, MN, where she taught Sunday school and Bible school. She was also a 40 year member of the American Legion Auxilary Unit 561, Lewisville. June was a 4-H leader and a member of the Commercial Club in Lewisville. She enjoyed crafts, reading and spending time with her grandchildren.
June is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, James and Jacqueline Poppe, Lewisville, MN; two daughters and sons-in-law, Chris and Steve Wratz of Farmington, MN, and Linda and Dan Carlson, Lewisville, MN; eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Owen and Bev Benton, Jr. of Plainview, MN and Gordon and Lizeth Benton of Germany; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marcy and Roy Wytaske of Mankato, MN and Audrey and Joe Kirk of Wichita, KS. June was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; one brother and one sister.
