Eugene Frank Gersch was born on October 19, 1931 in Chebanse Township, Iriquos County, ILL to Carl August and Alwine Ida Marie Wolle Gersch. He attended school dist. 7 in Watonwan County and Madelia High School. Eugene worked as a farmhand in Watonwan County before joining the US Airforce in 1951. Eugene was a mechanic with the Airforce serving in Germany. In 1954 he returned to Watonwan County and continued working as a farmhand. Eugene worked for Lewisville Motors starting in 1956. He drove truck at the Lewisville Creamery for several years. In the early 1960's Eugene purchased the Lewisville Mobile Gas Station and ran it for about ten years. He later worked for the Lewisville Farmer's Elevator. Eugene worked various other jobs until becoming disabled. Eugene lived in Lewisville, Madelia and later moved to the Sleepy Eye Care Center. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Madelia. Eugene was a 55 year member of the Lewisville American Legion Post 561. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, bird watching, building things and tinkering. Eugune died on Monday evening, January 7, 2008 at the Sleepy Eye Care Center, Sleepy Eye, MN.
Eugene is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Dawn Vee and her husband David of Hanska; three sons and two daughter-in-law, Roger and wife Joyce of Mankato, Bruce and wife Susan of Mankato, Scott of Madelia, MN; nine grandchildren, Nicole, Augusto, Ashley, Erica, Jerred, Travis, Patty, Jason and Lee; three great grandchildren, Kadra, Rylan and Lexi-lyn; twin sisters and brothers-in-law, Audrey Kassen and husband Myron, Arline Boeck and husband Delphin; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Wayne and wife Phyllis of St. James, Dale and wife Raedell of Cambria, MN and Loren of Madelia; and numerous nieces and nephews. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Edith.
