Doyle was born at home on July 27, 1935, to Hans and Hannah (Nelson) Peterson in Truman, Waverly Township, MN. He was the youngest of twelve children. After graduating from Truman High School in 1954 he farmed with his dad. In 1957 he joined the US Army and worked as a medic in Landstuhl, Germany. In the summer of 1958, his unit was deployed to Lebanon. He talked often and fondly of his service experience. He was very proud to have served his country.
When he came home in 1959, he worked at Truman Farmer’s Elevator. On October 24, 1959, he married his dancing partner, Arlene Meyer. They would make their home in Truman and raise their two children Jeff and Jennifer. He was the owner of Peterson Feed Inc. for over 30 years. He was a Purina and Snapper salesman. After closing the store, he worked at Watonwan Farm Services for 5 years and drove school bus for Truman Public Schools for 12 years. He and Arlene had a lawn care business. Many a lawn and shrubbery in Truman were shaped by their hands. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, he was the youngest member at the corner stone laying of the present church building in 1965, sang in the choir for over 40 years, served on the council, and was an usher. He was also a charter member of the Lions Club and the Truman Legion. He and Arlene traveled to all 50 states as well as Europe, Mexico and Canada. If you couldn’t find him at church or the store, he was probably at Rose Lake Golf Course. He will be remembered for his big smile, twinkle in his eye, and his firm handshake.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Arlene, son Jeff, and daughter Jennifer (Paul Schuster). His sisters-in-law, Geri (Lowell) Peterson and Phyllis (Merle) Peterson as well as many other sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers, 6 sisters, 4 sisters in law, 5 brothers in law, and his parents-in-law.
In lieu of flowers donations to Trinity Lutheran Church, Martin County Veterans Memorial (mcvm.org), or the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) would be appreciated.
