Jim Payne, age 70, of Truman, passed away on December 9, 2019 at his home. Funeral service will be held on Monday, December 16 at 10:30 am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Truman, with Pastor Greg Volbrecht officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 15 from 2-4pm at Zaharia Family Funeral Home in Truman. Additional visitation one hour prior to service at the church. James Douglas Payne was born February 12, 1949 to Lucille Deloris (Rath) and Sidney Russell Payne in Algona, IA. He attended and graduated from Ledyard High School in Ledyard, IA. James enlisted in the Air Force and served time in Vietnam. When he returned from Vietnam, he began working with Sig Clow shelling corn, then landed a job at Railway Motors, where he worked for over 30 years. He loved to go to work and enjoyed his Railway family.
James met and later married Sig’s sister, Carole Clow, on November 1, 1971. To this union their son Douglas was born.
Jim loved being outdoors hunting, trapping and fishing with Doug and Tony and his numerous friends. He also enjoyed playing cards and following the activities of his two grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. He stayed very close with his Basic Training buddies, building on the friendships they had formed years ago.
Jim is survived by his son, Douglas (Rachelle) Payne of Truman; 2 grandchildren, Hunter Carole Payne (fiancé Nick Steffel) and Anthony Roy Payne (Sara Schellpeper); brothers Jerry (Shirley) Payne of St. Peter, Carl Payne of Swea City, IA, Edward (Mary) Payne of Decorah, IA; sister Susan (Chester) Stump of Leesburg, IN; brother-in-law Virgil Hammerschmidt of Belle Plaine; sisters-in-law JoAnne “Boo” Grani of La Verne, CA, Elaine “Tem” (Larry) Armstrong of Truman, and Allene Clow of Truman; and many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carole “Poopy” Payne; brother Sidney Jr. (Marilyn) Payne; brothers-in-law, Roy Jr. "Sig" (Ramona) Clow, Donald Grani and Tony “Punk” Clow; sisters-in-law, Kareen “Teet” Hammerschmidt, Odell “Sis” Payne and Bonnie “Nubbie” (Erhardt) Grefe.
